Teaching Philosophy
My teaching philosophy is rooted in liberatory learning as I believe education is transformational, which is evident in my personal life and the lives of others who I engage in the teaching and learning process. As Freire (2004) states, “Liberation is a praxis: the action and reflection of men and women upon their world in order to transform it” (p. 79). The reciprocal nature of teaching and learning combined with the authentic engagement of those in the classroom is my aim during the teaching and learning exchange. Every learner brings a wealth of wisdom, such as academic, practice, and practical knowledge, into the room. Because of this belief, my role tends to be one of a facilitator and my teaching style tends to be learner-centered -- where responsibility and power are shared more equally.

In the classroom setting, Dr. Jewell utilizes her life experience to teach materials, serve as an advocate for students who have hurdles placed in front of them, and teach in a way that keeps students engaged and learning through different ways. Dr. Jewell is always able to utilize the strengths of her students to challenge and continue the learning process.
